How It Started
Ash Tree was founded in 1989 by Dr. Morris Brown, in response to the need for a community-based, structured rehabilitative program for juvenile offenders. Ash Tree offered an alternative to the criminal justice system through diverting the youth from generally unsatisfactory effects of institutionalism. The programs provided supervision and activities designed to keep youth off the streets, out of trouble with authorities, and teach them how to be both successful in school and in life. Ash Tree has been able to serve over 9,700 juvenile youths and their families, as well as offer more than 20 different community programs and services in Chatham County, and occasionally offers services in Bryan, Richmond, Evans, Effingham and Liberty counties in coastal Georgia.
The Transition
After much success from the after school program, Dr. Morris Brown decided to open his doors to serve all youth in the community. He no longer only served juvenile offenders, but any youth that needed a safe, productive, and loving atmosphere to reside after school.

In 2007, his wife, Margaret Brown saw many students in the program were not receiving the education or support needed in school. Some did not enjoy school but appreciated Ash Tree's after school program. With 15 years of public school teaching experience under her belt, she decided to add a day school to the Ash Tree Organization. This way Ash Tree will be able to have a longer influence on the students. Instead of just 3 hours after school, they are able to impact the students during the 7 hours of school as well.
